How to Resize an Image for Social Media
- 1Drop a photo on the upload box or click it to browse. JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 10 MB are accepted, and the original's pixel size is shown under the Original Image preview.
- 2Pick a platform tab (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn or YouTube) and then a size card such as Story / Reel or Cover Photo. For any other size, open Custom, type a width and height between 1 and 4096 px and press Apply Custom Size.
- 3Choose a Fit Mode: Cover (Fill), Contain (Fit) or Stretch. When you pick Contain, a Background Color picker appears for the empty space around the photo.
- 4Check the Preview, choose JPEG or PNG under Output Format, and press Download Image.
- 5Need every size at once? Download All Sizes for Platform saves one ZIP (for example instagram-sizes.zip) with 5 images for Instagram or Facebook, 4 for Twitter/X or LinkedIn and 3 for YouTube, all using your current fit mode and format.
Social Media Image Sizes This Tool Exports
Each row is the exact canvas the tool draws for that preset. Platforms change their layouts from time to time, so if an app's upload screen asks for a different size, use the Custom tab.

WhatsApp and TikTok
Neither has its own tab, but the existing presets cover them. For a WhatsApp status, or a TikTok photo post or cover, use Instagram → Story / Reel: it exports 1080 × 1920, the 9:16 full-screen vertical shape. For a WhatsApp DP, WhatsApp asks you for a square and then shows it as a circle, so any square preset works; YouTube → Profile Picture is the largest square here at 800 × 800.
If you post a price list, menu card or flyer to a WhatsApp status for your shop, use Contain (Fit) rather than Cover, so no prices or phone numbers get cut off at the edges.
Cover vs Contain vs Stretch: Which Fit Mode?
A typical phone photo is 4000 × 3000 pixels (4:3). Here is what each mode does when you send that photo to the 1080 × 1920 Story / Reel preset.
Cover (Fill), the default
The photo is scaled until it fills the whole frame, and whatever sticks out is cut off equally on both sides. From our 4000 px wide photo, only the middle 1687.5 px (about 42% of the width) survives, so people standing near the edges disappear. The crop is always centred; there is no drag-to-reposition, so if your subject is off to one side, crop it closer yourself first or use Contain.
Contain (Fit)
The whole photo stays visible and the empty space is filled with the Background Color (white unless you change it). The same photo becomes a 1080 × 810 band with 555 px bars above and below. This is the safe choice for anything with text: posters, price lists, certificates and screenshots. For bars in your brand colour, take the hex code from the color picker (it can also pull colours out of an image) and paste it into the text box in full #RRGGBB form, because short codes like #fff are ignored.
Stretch
The image is forced to the exact size with no cropping and no bars. If the shapes differ, it distorts: squeezing a 4000 × 3000 photo into a 1080 × 1080 square scales the width by 0.27 but the height by 0.36, so everything looks 25% narrower than it should and faces turn noticeably thin. Only use Stretch when the original is already almost the same shape as the preset.
Safe Zones: Where Not to Put Text
Every app draws its own buttons and labels on top of your image. These are rules of thumb, not official specs, and overlays shift between app versions and phones, so always check the upload preview.
- Stories, Reels, status and TikTok (1080 × 1920): the top carries your name and the progress bar, and the bottom carries the reply box or caption. A common habit is to keep text and faces out of roughly the top and bottom 250 px, which leaves a central band about 1420 px tall. On Reels and TikTok, also keep clear of the right edge, where the like and comment buttons sit.
- Profile pictures: most platforms show them as a circle, and a circle drawn inside a square loses about 21% of the area in the corners. Centre the face and leave some space around it.
- Facebook cover (820 × 312): phones show a narrower slice than computers, so keep logos and text near the middle.
- LinkedIn banner (1584 × 396): your profile photo overlaps the lower-left part of the banner on your profile page, so put text in the centre or on the right.
- YouTube channel banner (2560 × 1440): the full image only appears on TVs. YouTube's own guidance keeps text and logos inside a central area of about 1546 × 423 px, which is what shows on phones and computers.
Output Format, File Size and Privacy
- JPEG (the default) is saved at 92% quality, which keeps photos small. PNG is lossless, so it is sharper for graphics with text or flat colours but usually much larger for photos.
- No transparency: the tool fills the canvas with the background colour before drawing, in every mode. A transparent PNG logo therefore comes out on white. To use another colour, pick it while Contain is selected; the colour stays in effect if you then switch back to Cover.
- No size target: there is no quality slider or KB limit here. If a website form or a slow connection needs a smaller file, run the download through the image compressor, or turn it into WebP with the image converter.
- Privacy: the photo is read with the browser's FileReader and redrawn on a canvas on your device; the tool has no code that uploads it anywhere. Because the image is redrawn, the download also leaves behind the original's camera metadata, such as GPS location.
Troubleshooting
- Custom size not showing: switching to the Custom tab keeps the previous preset until you press Apply Custom Size. Download All Sizes for Platform does not work on the Custom tab; it needs a platform tab.
- Nothing happens after choosing a file: your browser could not read that format (some browsers cannot open iPhone HEIC photos, for example). Save it as JPG or PNG and try again.
- "File too large": the limit is 10 MB per image. Export a smaller copy from your phone's gallery or editor first.
- Want to see how an existing video is framed? The YouTube thumbnail downloader saves any video's thumbnail so you can compare it with yours.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is an Instagram post?
This tool exports Instagram posts at 1080 x 1080 (square), 1080 x 1350 (portrait, 4:5) and 1080 x 608 (landscape). At the same 1080 px width, the portrait version is the tallest, so it fills the most of a phone screen in the feed.
What size is an Instagram story or reel?
The Story / Reel preset exports 1080 x 1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical image. Keep text and faces away from the top and bottom edges, because the app draws your name, the progress bar and the reply box over those areas.
What is the Facebook cover photo size?
The Cover Photo preset exports 820 x 312 pixels. Phones show a narrower slice of the cover than computers do, so keep logos and text near the middle rather than at the left or right edge.
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
The Thumbnail preset exports 1280 x 720 pixels, which is 16:9. Use Cover (Fill) mode so the thumbnail has no empty bars, and check that your main subject is near the centre, because the crop is always taken from the middle of the photo.
What size should a WhatsApp DP or status be?
There is no WhatsApp tab, but WhatsApp asks for a square profile photo and shows it as a circle, so any square preset works; YouTube Profile Picture gives 800 x 800. For a status, use the Instagram Story / Reel preset, which exports a full-screen 1080 x 1920 vertical image.
What is the difference between Cover, Contain and Stretch?
Cover (Fill) fills the whole frame and crops the overflow evenly from the centre. Contain (Fit) keeps the entire image and fills the leftover space with a background colour you choose. Stretch forces the image to the exact size without cropping, which distorts it if the shapes differ.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The image is read and resized inside your browser with the HTML canvas, and the download file is created on your device; the page has no code that sends your image anywhere. The only extra script the tool loads is the JSZip library, which builds the Download All Sizes ZIP.
Why does my resized image look blurry?
Usually the original is smaller than the size you chose, so the tool has to enlarge it. The original size is shown under the Original Image preview; for sharp results it should be at least as large as the export size, for example 1280 px wide for a YouTube thumbnail.
