How to Merge PDF Files

  1. Add your PDFs. Drop them on the Drop PDF files here box, or click it to choose files. You can select several at once.
  2. Add more if needed. Use Add More above the list. New files are placed at the bottom.
  3. Set the order. Drag each row into place. The number on the right of a row is its position in the final document; the X removes a row.
  4. Check the totals. The grey bar shows how many files and pages you are about to combine.
  5. Click Merge PDFs. Progress is shown file by file. You need at least two files, otherwise you will see "Need more files".
  6. Download. Click Download Merged PDF to save merged.pdf. Merge More clears everything for a new job, so download first.

How the Merge Works, Without Uploading

When you add a PDF, your browser reads it straight from your device and the open-source pdf-lib library counts its pages. When you click Merge PDFs, pdf-lib creates a new empty document and copies every page of every file into it, top of the list first. The result is built in memory and handed to you as a download. Nothing is sent to a server, which matters when the files are bank statements, ID scans or contracts.

Pages are copied as they are: text stays selectable, images are not re-compressed, and no watermark or extra page is added. A few things do not carry over, because only the pages are copied and not the rest of each file:

  • Bookmarks (the outline panel in your PDF reader) from the original files are dropped.
  • Fillable form fields stop working as fields. What was already typed usually still shows, but it can no longer be edited as a form.
  • Title and author are not copied; the merged file lists pdf-lib as its Producer and Creator.

Worked example: you add invoice-march.pdf (2 pages), bank-statement.pdf (5 pages) and cover-letter.pdf (1 page). The bar reads "3 files • 8 pages". Drag the cover letter to the top and merge: page 1 of merged.pdf is the cover letter, pages 2–3 are the invoice and pages 4–8 are the statement. You can also add the same file twice, for example a separator page between sections.

Limits and What to Expect

Item What the tool does
File typePDF only; other files show "is not a PDF file"
Size per fileUp to 10 MB (10,485,760 bytes); larger files show "exceeds 10MB limit"
Number of filesAt least 2; no fixed maximum
PagesAll pages of each file, in their original order
Protected PDFsNot decrypted; refused with a message when added
OutputOne file named merged.pdf

About the size limit: this tool counts 1 MB as 1,048,576 bytes, as Windows does. macOS Finder counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, so the largest accepted file appears there as about 10.5 MB.

Password-Protected PDFs and Merging on a Phone

Protected files

Many bank statements, salary slips and e-statements arrive encrypted, either with a password you type to open them or with "permissions" that block editing or printing. This merger cannot decrypt either kind, so it checks every file as you add it: a protected PDF is refused with a "Password-protected PDF" message instead of being merged into blank pages. A badly damaged file shows "Could not read … It may be password-protected or corrupt" instead. The fix is the same: open the PDF in a reader where you know the password, save or print an unprotected copy (only if you are entitled to), and merge that copy. Always open merged.pdf and scroll through it before you send it.

On Android or iPhone

The merger runs in mobile browsers too. Tap the upload box, choose the PDFs from your phone's storage or any cloud app that appears in the file picker, and tap Merge PDFs. Reordering relies on dragging, which some mobile browsers do not support for this list, so add the files in the order you want them. The saved file usually lands in Downloads on Android, or in the Files app on iPhone. Very large sets of files can run out of memory on older phones; merge them in two batches and then merge the two results.

Common Uses and When to Use Another Tool

  • Job and admission applications that accept a single upload: CV, degree, transcripts and experience letters in one file, in the order the form asks for.
  • Visa and embassy files where the checklist order matters and the documents are too personal to upload to an unknown website.
  • Month-end paperwork for your accountant or tax consultant: invoices, receipts and bank statements combined into one file per month.
  • Assignments and reports where a title page, the main document and appendices were made in different apps.

Need something slightly different?

  • Only need certain pages, or want to take a PDF apart? Use the PDF Splitter to extract pages first, then merge the pieces here.
  • Merged file too big for an email or a portal's upload limit? Try the PDF Compressor.
  • Have photos or scans (JPG, PNG) rather than PDFs? Turn them into a PDF with Image to PDF, then add it to your merge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this PDF merger free, and does it add a watermark?

Yes, it is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark, stamp or extra page. Your pages are copied into the new file unchanged; the only trace is the document properties, which list pdf-lib, the open-source library that performs the merge, as the Producer and Creator.

Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?

No. Your files are read and merged inside your browser with the pdf-lib library, and the merged PDF is created on your device as a download. Your files are never sent anywhere; the only download the merge itself needs is the pdf-lib library code.

How do I change the order of the PDFs before merging?

Drag a file row up or down in the list; the number badge on the right shows its position. Files are joined from top to bottom, and the X button removes a file you added by mistake.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

No. The tool cannot decrypt PDFs, so when you add a file that has an open password or editing restrictions it shows a "Password-protected PDF" message and leaves that file out. Open it in a PDF app with the password, save an unprotected copy if you are allowed to, and merge that copy instead.

How many PDFs can I merge, and how large can they be?

Each PDF can be up to 10 MB (10,485,760 bytes) and you need at least two files. There is no fixed maximum number of files; the practical limit is your device's memory, because every file is held in the browser while you work.

Can I merge PDFs on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser, tap the upload box and pick the PDFs from your storage. Dragging rows to reorder may not respond to touch in some mobile browsers, so add the files in the order you want them, or do the reordering on a computer.

Can I merge only some pages or reorder pages inside a PDF?

No. The merger copies every page of every file, in each file's original page order. To use only certain pages, extract them first with the PDF Splitter and then merge the extracted files.

Why is my merged PDF so large, and how can I make it smaller?

Pages and their images are copied as they are, without re-compression, so the merged file is usually close to the combined size of the originals. If it is too big for email or an upload portal, run it through the PDF Compressor.
